After World War II, Stevens graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Harvard Law School, and in 1953 he joined a law firm in Fairbanks, Alaska. Soon after that, he became the federal prosecutor there. In 1956, he went to Washington, D.C., to work in the Department of the Interior on Alaska’s statehood.
