with Lisa Mehdi and Stefanie Furer
Emmy's Best and Worst
All in all, Stef and I concure...more fashion losers than winners. We were shocked to see so many ill-fitting dresses with crazy hem lines and obscure designs on the red carpet. It's never a good thing when the anchors (e.g., E!'s Guiliana Rancic) are better dressed than the stars! Navy was definitely the color of the evening and those who did rock a glam look looked fabulous.
BEST DRESSED...
We both agree on one of the stunners of the night...

(1) Lea Michele
Stefanie - Stunning Oscar de la Renta gown with cascading ruffles in a gorgeous navy blue color? And a sweetheart neckline with a mermaid cut? Drooling right now. Absolutely, without a single doubt, gorgeous.
Lisa - Ruffled navy goodness...neckline with bib diamond jewels...head to toe Goddess!
Stefanie and I pick differently for the next three...

(2) Mariska Hargitay
Stefanie - The Law and Order SVU star looks absolutely radiant in this cream gown with tulle overlay. It looks like a couture version of my friend's wedding dress - in a good way! The dress looked like it was made just for her. Stunning.
Lisa- I thought it was too pale and washed her out.

(3) Eva Longoria Parker
Stefanie - Does this woman ever dress inappropriately? No. I love how timeless this dress is, and even though she's wearing black, it's a standout garment that beautifully tailored to fit her tiny figure. And I loved her hair and accessories.
Lisa - Have to admit...she could wear a glad bag and be a show stopper but like other dresses more.

(4) Jennifer Carpenter
Stefanie - I'm so in love with the one-shoulder dresses right now. And the metallic gray material was absolutely perfect for the cut of the gown. Her side-swept hair was the perfect way to top off the look. Simply gorgeous.
Lisa - ehhhhhh...gun metal color too me seems heavy like a lead shield at the dental office...do however like the side swept hair.

(5) Claire Danes
Lisa - Sexy strapless silhoutte...Armani Prive is breathtaking!
Stefanie - She looks absolutely radiant in this gorgeous dress - it makes her completely light up. I want this dress!

(6) Maria Menounes
Lisa - Beaded Ralph & Russo...another beaded stunner...with enough cutout to see her outstanding figure...yet enough left to imagination because there is no side slit.
Stefanie - I love Maria Menounos, so anything she wears looks beautiful on her. I'm a HUGE fan of the hair and the cutouts in the back, but I'm not completely in love with the front of the dress. Her makeup is absolutely on point too!

(7) Jane Lynch
Lisa - Gleefully Eggplant! Loved it. She looked radiant and was very flattering not only in color but style.
Stefanie - Ehhh. Didn't like it. It's one step away from being a bridesmaid's dress with the unflattering taffeta material.
WORST DRESSED...had to make five choices due to all of the competition and not in a good way...

(1) Ana Paquin
Stefanie - This dress looks like it was made by a student at fashion school (no offense to anyone currently studying fashion design!). Nothing was cohesive and the top part of the dress looked like it was part of an arts and crafts project. The draping was absolutely a mess and she couldn't have paired worse shoes with her gown.
Lisa - This dress is clunky, square, heavy, and hideous...meant for a beast slayer...total killer on red carpet!

(2) Tina Fey
Stefanie - Why does this funny lady need to wear funny dresses to elegant awards shows? It's my grandma's drapes on a beautiful figure. Doesn't do her any favors.
Lisa - WTH? Oscar de la Hot Mess. One step away from having Kokapelli outlines on this disaster.

(3) January Jones
Stefanie - This had the potential to be a beautiful dress. I loved the silky, shiny material and the beautiful cobalt hue, but I wasn't happy with the cut. The train is absolutely stunning, and had the front of the Versace gown fallen all the way to the floor, it would have been at the top of my list for "Best Dressed."
Lisa - Metallic color loved...channeling lady gaga with a hoop skirt...not so much! Overall thumbs way down!
Then we added a couple more...

(4) Heidi Klum
Stefanie - I actually think this dress is adorable. With Heidi's legs, you really can't go wrong! I just wish she nixed the updo and went for cascading side waves instead.
Lisa - Sparkly Marchesa...although this woman has legs that go for days...I think they would be better suited in two more inches of fabric. Also the pairing with bold necklace and sparkly shoes...way too much going on here.

(5) Lauren Graham
Stefanie - Another design school arts and crafts mess. None of the proportions are right, the hem is way too high, and she looks like she's wearing a baby Bjorn.
Lisa - Is that a napkin bib for bbq or a cover for a nurshing mother? What is black and white and unflattering all over?

(6) Toni Collette
Stefanie - Did the woman step in mud before she arrived? Maybe some kids wiped their dirty chocolate hands all over her dress? Either way, it looks like she took a dirty sheet and wrapped it around her body.
Lisa - Sometimes it's shocking what people think is beautiful...one shot and ya pick a partial tie dye number that isn't hemmed appropriately? hmm....
All and all some great fashion hits and a few more misses than expected. We are glad that Modern Family won :)

Okay. Lately I've seen so many people wearing the most adorable summer dresses, tops, and skirts, and every time I swear it costs at least $50 more than they actually paid for it. Case in point: I went to dinner with some friends last weekend. My good friend Laurie wore an absolutely adorable floral-print summer dress. It reminded me of a Joie or Rebecca Taylor design. So when she told me she bought it online at ModCloth.com for less than $100, I was shocked.
At happy hour tonight, another friend wore the most stunning blouse I've seen in a while. I wasn't sure at first if she was wearing a top and skirt or just a dress. Turns out it was a top she found at Forever 21. FOREVER 21. I honestly thought she bought it at Neiman Marcus or the Savvy department in Nordstrom.
While I've had luck in the past digging for buried treasures in stores like H&M and Forever 21, I seem to have some sort of block against finding anything under $50 that passes for something you'd find in a high-end store.
However, after perusing through one of my favorite websites I found some amazing finds under $50 that'll take you from the summer all the way through fall and into holiday parties (when paired with a cardigan or tights, of course):
And by the way, I definitely recommend shopping online at ModCloth.com - I found a few dresses that I'm thisclose to buying.

Posted by Stefanie
Project Runway Season 7 winner, Seth Aaron Henderson, is going solar.
The Portland-based fashion designer is showcasing a new line of solar-powered clothing at Portland Fashion Week on October 9th.
Of course, the focus of his new collection will be eco-friendly, green, and sustainable fashion design. His theme, "Solar is the New Black", will surely leave attendees with their jaws resting on the ground below them. If it's Seth Aaron, you know it's going to be good. His designs during his run on Project Runway were always perfectly constructed, cutting-edge and definitely not boring.
His green designs will float down a runway made of black solar panels.
If that isn't eco-friendly fashion, I don't know what is.

Move over, skinny jeans!
Guys, ever feel like your gut starts to protrude over your waistband every time you polish off a plate of onion rings or a ham and cheese 12-egg omelet from Beth's cafe?
Well, fear not: San Francisco-based online shopping company, Betabrand, came up with a solution to hiding your expanding belly in those overeating situations.
Behold, the Gluttony Pants.

The "Gluttony Pants" feature an adjustable buttoned waistband setting with three separate fastenings. Fasten the first button to "Piglet" for days when all you want is a salad. "Sow", the second button, comes in handy when you order a few too many beers. And then there's "Boar" for those trips to all-you-can-eat buffets. Too bad they don't make these for women!
If you're interested, they come in one color (tannish brown) and are straight-legged with a relaxed fit. For $100, they're all yours!
Hem Gem Genius!

Cute and inexpensive way to take the heel jeans and make them flip flop jeans in minutes...Hem Jems. Girlfriend was wearing them last night on a pair of dark wash denim numbers that are everywhere for Fall. It's a good weekend solution or travel solution if you are tight on suitcase space.
(4) options and set of (8) is $20 bucks...

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Posted by Stefanie

The season finale of ABC's The Bachelorette is fast approaching, and in preparation for the final episode, I taped a couple "documentaries" on the popular series. ABC's "Behind the Rose" went behind the scenes of the reality show, showcasing all the drama, tears, love, and sexual tension we all know and love. But the underlying theme of this particular feature wasn't so much about the love and tears for me...it was more about how much the show has changed as a whole.
In the first season, it was evident the girls didn't really know what they were getting themselves into. Same with the first bachelor, Alex Michel, a guinea pig for a series that would inevitably become a huge hit. Neither the bachelor nor the contestants realized they would be catapulted into fame. That's why in the first few seasons, no one had a personal stylist or makeup artist, and while they were treated to extravagant dates, it still didn't match up to the calibur of the fantasy dates we see today. No one was really anxious to be on the cover of US Weekly.
The women - even more so the "bachelorettes" - started out as the girl-next-door type, fresh-faced with a "normal" wardrobe. Now in the 15th season we have Ali Fedotowski, the quintessential "girl-next-door" that would rather wear sneakers with a ball gown instead of sky-high Louboutins (which, in my opinion, is really annoying!).
And then there was Jillian Harris, who wore designer duds and a couture gown for the final rose ceremony and Versace on the "The Men Tell All" episode. And have you noticed the engagement ring diamonds get bigger and bigger each season? All the women have perfectly applied makeup (and we're not just talking about the bachelorettes), and now we have bloggers dedicated to finding each piece a bachelorette wore during her season. I love how much the show has changed, for better or for worse, because it's so much fun to hunt down your favorite contestant's sparkling gold bracelet (where did she get that?) and her pretty peep-toe pumps (to die!). It's funny how these non-celebrities almost run the show now when it comes to fashion trends.
I can't wait to see what Ali wears to the taping of the final episode. ABC's "Behind the Rose" gave us a few sneak peeks of some of Ali's dresses, but we all know she ends up wearing a gorgeous gold gown to the final rose ceremony. I also can't wait to see who Ali chooses as her leading man (for no more than 6 months, I'm sure). My money is on Chris, an underdog but definitely a better match for down-to-earth Ali.
Madewell Open at U Village

What's it all about?
Established in 1937 and primarily known for their jeans...however they carry a lil bit of everything. Vintage insired jewelry, chambray shirts, rompers, denim/boardwalk shorts, body fitting tees, sweaters, jackets, vests, shoes and boots. In my opinion, a merge of Mercer and Anthrolpologie with a smaller(yahoo) pricepoint. Here are some examples...

Dress $88 Scarf $45 Ankle Boots $198

Knit Legging $28 Chambray Shirt $68 Fringed Necklace $58

Fashion at your Fingertips
Posted by Stefanie

Last night, after laying in bed unable to fall asleep, I started playing around on my iPhone and hit gold with dozens of fun and addicting style apps.
The first, Carrie's Closet, is a seriously addicting app that allows you to photograph your clothes (sorry, Manolos aren't included), and tag each item with a custom label. You can also use the search tool to find that long lost dress you've been dying to wear.
Vogue's Web site, style.com allows users to watch runway shows around the world. Marc Jacobs in Milan? Check.
Glamour Ask a Stylist is my personal favorite. Got a question about what to wear for date night? Aren't sure if your gold heels go with your new dress? Type in your question, insert a photo, and a stylist will give you the cold, hard truth. It's really handy if you're having an outfit dilemma and you're running 10 minutes late.
This isn't an iPhone app, but I stumbled on this new Facebook game by PopSugar called Retail Therapy. It's like Avatar for fashionistas. Literally. You "shop" from brands like Barneys, Diane von Furstenberg, and Tory Burch, pretending you're in an exclusive boutique. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard it's pretty addicting.

I am Lisa Mehdi and I want to help you get your groove back! I believe looking fresh and current on a budget is very possible... everyone can be a frugal fashionista! Wouldn't you like to free your closet of the outdated clutter and stop sacrificing your personal style? HELLO! I can help you keep costs down and be smart about the 3 W's: when (is my event), what (do I need to complete my look), where (can I afford it). Paying full price is just not necessary, people!
I am a freelance makeup artist and a connoisseur of all things relating to art, design, and fashion. I am a University of Washington grad with a degree in Journalism and I also spent several years as a makeup artist for Stila cosmetics, where my love of painting and sketching helped develop my technique. I have spent the past three years as the Programming Coordinator for Bonneville Seattle Media Group. If I am not booking appointments, you can find me sketching, collecting expensive footwear, or spending my paycheck at local boutiques.
